SQL Server Manual Installation

The Management by Statistics 3 uses Microsoft SQL Server to manage your information in database files. SQL Server was choosen because of its robust features and rugged operations. It is capable of handling hundreds and thousands of users on a routine basis, while at the same time being compact enough for single computer operation.

There are times when a computer either does not have the features required to run SQL Server or one or more of these features has been disabled. In these cases, the installer for the Mastertech Database Manager will instruct you to install SQL Server manually.

A manual install of SQL Server will identify exactly which feature(s) is missing from your computer so that you can correct this.

IMPORTANT NOTE: You must be logged into Windows as an Administrator.

Manual Installation of SQL Server Instructions:

  1. Download the SQL Server 2008 Express installation file by doing the following:

    1. Go to the following link at Microsoft to download the SQL Server Installer:

    2. Select the download button for "SQLEXPR_x86_ENU.exe", as shown below.

    3. Click the Save button. The installer will be saved in your computer's Download folder.

  7. Next you will get a report showing if the system passes for installation of SQL Server. If there is a firewall on the computer, then you should receive a warning that the firewall needs to be configured to allow access to SQL Server for it to receive requests from other computers. An example of this is shown below.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Any failed parts will need to be handled. The warning about Windows Firewall is automatically resolved by the Mastertech Database Manager. If you are using a 3rd party firewall on your computer, then you will need to set that firewall to allow connections to SQL Server after the installation is completed. See the manual for your firewall for instructions on how to do this.

    Click Next to continue.

  8. Select the first item, "Perform a new installation of SQL Server 2008". Click Next to continue.

If you want your data to be stored in a different place on the hard drive than the default, then you can change the data folders in the Data Directories tab.

If you want to change the drive and directory where the data is stored, we recommend that you set the User database directory and User database log directory to the same place. This is simply to keep your data files organized.
