Part 1 – Installing the Database1

There are 2 parts to download and install, so please follow all of the instructions on this page.

IMPORTANT: If you are upgrading from version 3.0 or 3.1 to 3.5, you must update Management by Statistics on each computer it is installed on. If you have multiple Management by Statistics connecting to the database, make sure you have the time to complete the installation on all the computers needing it before beginning Part 1.

You can upgrade from version 3.2 to version 3.5 without installing the new database. Simply install the 3.5 updates.

Be sure that all Windows updates have been installed and the computer restarted, if necessary, before doing this installation. There are some Windows updates which are required.

If this is not the computer where the database is installed, go to that computer and log in with a Windows user that has administrator rights to that computer, then return to this page to download the update on to the server. You must have administrator rights to install or run the Database Manager. The Database Manager only needs to be installed on one computer.

Download the Database Manager update by clicking the Download button below.

Depending on the browser you use, the installer may run automatically or may be saved in your Downloads folder. Follow the instructions and run the installer to install the Database Manager.

Please read all of the instructions on this page before installing part 2.

Complete the installation and the Database Manager will start when you click on the Finish.

You will be asked to create a database. Click No as you already have a database with your data in it. The database just needs to be moved.

Next, select the previous SQL Server, MBSDATAEXPRESS, as shown below.

Go the Database tab and click the Detach Database button. This disconnects your database files from SQL Server and allows us to attach it the new version you just installed.

Copy your database files from their previous location to their new location.

There are two files to copy: MBSData.mdf and MBSData_log.ldf

The new location will be a folder called MSSQL11.MBSEXPRESS2012\DATA. The full folder location is shown in the screen shot below.

Select the MBSEXPRESS2012 Sql Server, as shown below.

Once again answer No when asked to create a new database.

Next you will attach your database to SQL Server by clicking the Attach a Database File button.

Once again answer No when asked to create a new database.

Select the correct file, which will be in a folder called MSSQL11.MBSEXPRESS2012\DATA.

If the database file attaches to SQL Server correctly, the Database Manager will look like the following screen shot. The database is automatically upgraded to include the newest features and the version number will be displayed on this screen.

Next you should set the backup schedule as the old backup schedule is not retained when moving from an earlier version to version 3.2.

At this point you are ready for the Part 2 of the installation.

1. A Database is a computer term used to mean a file or files where data is stored in a central location for access by one or more users. A database differs from a document file in that a document generally is only accessible by one user at a time and is organized by pages. A database is generally capable of being accessed by many users at once, with each user being able to read and save information at the same time.
2. SQL stands for Structured Query Language which is a programming language used to query (ask for) information from a database.
