For network installations, your data is generally stored on a central computer called a server. This allows all the employees in a business to share the same data. The Management by Statistics software and the data can be installed on the same computer for single computer operation.

In order for the Management by Statistics software to operate it must be able to connect to the data. Network security software sometimes interrupt such connections.

When the Management by Statistics software is started for the first time on a computer the Database Connections window (shown below) opens automatically.

The Database Connections window also opens when the software cannot connect to data it use to be able to connect wih. If the software worked before, but cannot connect now, there has been some change on your network. Use the list of steps below to help you resolve the problem.

Use the Following Steps to Debug Connection Problems

  1. 1.

The first thing to check is if the data will accept the default password.

In most cases the Database Authentication2 3 method is the best choice. The password will either be the default password or a password set by the system administrator.

To test if the default password is the correct one to use, click the Use Default buton. If this is the correct setting, the Connection Successful message will display.

If not, continue to step 2.

  2. 2.

The next thing to check is to see if the Windows user you signed into your computer with will grant you access to the data.

If the data is located on the same computer you are on this method should work.

Select the Windows Authentication4 mode, then click the Test Connection button. If this is the correct setting, the Connection Successful message will display.

If not, continue to step 3.

  3. 3.

Inform your network administrator that you are having difficulty connecting to the database for the Mangement by Statistics software.

Here are some possible causes of connection problems:

    1. The network administrator has set a password for the database other than the default password. If this is the case, obtain the password from the network administrator.
    2. The computer where the database is installed is turned off or no longer connected to the network.
    3. The database software installed on the server is not running.
    4. Your computer is not connected to the network.
    5. Security software installed either on your computer or on the server is blocking the connection.

Our customer support department can assist you in solving connection problems, but you will need to have administrator access to the computer where the data is installed. Without administrator access to the server our customer support staff will not be able to determine the cause of the problem.

1. A Database is a computer term used to mean a file or files where data is stored in a central location for access by one or more users. A database differs from a document file in that a document generally is only accessible by one user at a time and is organized by pages. A database is generally capable of being accessed by many users at once, with each user being able to read and save information at the same time.
2. Authentication has a somewhat specialized meaning in computers. It essentially means to verify the user, which can be done in several ways. The most common means of verifying or authenticating a user is to have the user provide a password.
3. Database Authentication is a simple password authentication method. There is a password set for the database the user needs to provide to gain access. The Management by Statistics system uses a default password upon installation. Click the "Use Default" button to check to see if this is the correct password. For higher security installations, the database password should be changed in the Database Manager.
4. Windows Authentication verifies that the user you signed into your computer with has access. It is assumed that because you have gained access to the computer using a Windows user name and password that you are that person. The database then checks to see if you have been granted access to the data. If your Windows user name has not been granted access, you will not be able to connect to the database.
